Brad Peters, Psychologist
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Brad is a licensed Clinical Psychologist. He holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Clinical Life-Span Psychology. Brad's graduate training involved 3 years, including doctoral-level coursework at the University of Victoria. He has conducted research related to family and child development, including pediatric pain and issues involving parental separation and divorce. Brad was also a part-time psychology professor at Saint Mary's University for over 10 years, where he was especially passionate about personality theory and philosophical psychology. His 2019 lectures are now on YouTube.
In his therapy practice, Brad works with children (12+), adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Drawing from a variety of theories and therapy styles, Brad will use his experience and judgment to find the right approach for you.
In essence, Brad considers himself a “theoretical integrationist.” His approach begins with an understanding that we are, first and foremost, individuals, with a unique experience of the world and our own story to tell. Although we are each undoubtedly influenced by our biology, this biology has been shaped and is constantly being shaped by our relationships with other people (both past and present), and by larger sociocultural influences.
In psychology terms, Brad's therapy work would mostly draw upon humanistic-existential, neuroscientific, attachment, and psychodynamic theories. He has additionally been influenced by his long study of human agency and free will, as well as by various philosophers from Kierkegaard to Nietzsche and Heidegger.
Overall, Brad tries to understand and help his clients work through what may be the deeper causes of their problems, rather than manage symptoms with superficial (and often short-lived) interventions. He thus takes special interest in working with those who have had previous courses of therapy that were unsuccessful.
Once an owner of a busy group practice of psychologists in Halifax, Brad has since down-sized his professional work to a solo practice. He now lives a somewhat simpler life just outside of the city. Brad currently enjoys spending time with family, being active outdoors with his dog Otis, and reading history and philosophy.
